Conversation Tools That Actually Work

3 Opening Questions · 4 Objections · The Awkward-Moment Phrase
Full Text
1 Peter 3:15 "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect."
THE BIG IDEA
You do not need a seminary degree to have a meaningful spiritual conversation with anybody, anywhere. You need a small set of well-practiced tools — three opening questions, four common objections handled gracefully, and one phrase that handles 80% of awkward moments.

The 3 Opening Questions

THE 3 OPENERS 1) "What's the heaviest thing you're carrying these days?" 2) "If you could ask God one question and know He'd answer honestly, what would you ask?" 3) "Tell me about your spiritual background — what was church or faith like for you growing up?"

Why these three work: question 1 invites them into Level 3 listening immediately. Question 2 reveals their actual obstacle to faith without you having to guess. Question 3 lets you understand the wound before you ever address the worldview. Use one. Then shut up. Then ask follow-ups.

The Four Most Common Objections (and how to handle them)

Objection 1: "I don't believe in organized religion."

BAD response: "Well, the Bible says…" GOOD response: "That makes sense. A lot of people who say that have a specific story behind it. Would you tell me yours?" Then listen. Most of the time, the issue is not theology; it is a wound. Honor the wound first.

Objection 2: "How can a loving God allow evil/suffering?"

BAD response: a five-point theological framework. GOOD response: "That is one of the hardest questions in the world, and I would not trust someone who tried to answer it in two minutes. Can I ask what part of suffering you're carrying that makes that question feel personal?"

Objection 3: "I'm spiritual but not religious."

BAD response: "Well, you have to make a decision." GOOD response: "I love that. What does spiritual mean to you, practically? What spiritual practices actually shape your week?"

Objection 4: "All religions basically say the same thing."

BAD response: "No, they don't, and let me explain why." GOOD response: "That's interesting — a lot of people feel that way. Can I tell you what makes Jesus distinct for me? I'm curious what you'd push back on."

The One Phrase That Handles 80% of Awkward Moments

THE MAGIC PHRASE "Tell me more about that." When in doubt — when you do not know what to say, when they say something you disagree with, when they say something that hurts — ask, "Tell me more about that." Then listen. This phrase is the most powerful single tool in evangelism. Use it shamelessly.

Three Things to Stop Doing

  • STOP CORRECTING IMMEDIATELY. The conversation is more important than the correction.
  • STOP ARGUING TO WIN. Win the trust, lose the argument, gain the soul.
  • STOP HIDING WHAT YOU BELIEVE. Listening is the foundation, not the finish line. At the right moment, you have to share.

Praying for People in the Moment

When someone shares a real burden with you, ask, "Can I pray for you about that — right now?" Not later. Right now. About 90% of people will say yes. The 10% who say no will respect you for asking.

DO THE WORK — THE 3-CONVERSATION CHALLENGE
Over the next 14 days, have three different spiritual conversations using one of the three openers.
Conversation 1 (date / person / opener / what happened):
MEASURE IT — CHAPTER 11
☐ I have memorized the 3 Opening Questions.
☐ I can articulate a graceful response to each of the 4 objections.
☐ I have asked to pray with at least one person in the moment in the last 14 days.
☐ I have completed the 3-Conversation Challenge.
