The Pull Up Zone

Presence is not a strategy. It is a decision. It is the decision to be with people before we ever try to be helpful to them. Before we correct. Before we invite. Before we counsel. Before we teach. We just show up, undefended, and let our being there mean something.

Most of what we call ministry has a lot of talking in it. Pull Up starts somewhere quieter. It starts with a hand on a shoulder, a coffee across a table, a car ride, a phone call at the right hour. It starts with somebody who did not have to be there but was.

The reason is theological. God’s answer to a broken world was not more religion. It was a body. He did not shout instructions from the sky. He moved into the neighborhood. Presence is the shape of the gospel before it is the message of the gospel.

Understanding is what happens after presence but before advice. It is the discipline of curiosity — of asking one more question than you feel like asking. Of holding your own opinions long enough to actually hear somebody else’s.

Most conversations in the church tilt toward correction. Somebody says something, we form our response, and we wait for our turn to speak. Understanding says: not yet. First, tell me more. What did you mean by that? When did that start? What has it cost you?

The people God brings across your path are not projects. They are stories in progress. Your first job is not to edit their story. It is to read it. Slowly. With the same reverence you would read Scripture. Because God is writing on them, too.

Understanding is the posture. Listening is the practice. And it is harder than it sounds — because listening asks you to give up something you do not want to give up: control.

When you are talking, you are steering the conversation. When you are listening, the other person is. Listening is the discipline of letting somebody else drive for a while. That is why so many of us are bad at it. We would rather teach than learn, rather solve than sit.

There are levels of listening. The lowest is habitual — you are nodding while your mind writes the grocery list. The next is attentive — you are hearing the words. The next is active — you are reflecting back. The highest is generative — you are holding space for the other person to say the thing they did not know they knew until they said it in your presence. Pull Up asks you to live in the top two.

Love in Pull Up is not a feeling. It is a verb with hands on it. It is what you do when the feeling is not there and you love the person anyway.

The Greek word is agape — love that is not earned, not deserved, not conditional. It is the love God chose to have for us before we ever chose him. And it is the love we are asked to carry to the people we would not naturally love: the difficult family member, the neighbor with the different politics, the co-worker who wounded us last year. Agape shows up. Agape brings the meal. Agape stays.

If your love for the people on your Three depends on them being lovable, you will burn out. If your love comes from the well of what God has already loved you with, you will not.

Uplift is the moment you name what you are doing. It is when the meal you dropped off becomes a witness because you added the sentence “I have been praying for you.” It is when the ride you gave becomes a testimony because at some point you said “Jesus has been walking with me through this, and I think he is walking with you too.”

Service without word is only half a witness. The world is full of nice people who help. Some of them are Christians. Nothing distinguishes the two until somebody speaks. Uplift is the discipline of speaking — quietly, briefly, at the right moment, out of the abundance of the presence, understanding, listening, and love that came before it.

You are not being asked to preach. You are being asked to lift the name of Jesus in the middle of what you are already doing. Once. This week. Somewhere.

Prayer is not the first P because we live the framework in reverse. Everything else was setup. Prayer is the point.

Every action in the previous five weeks — the presence, the understanding, the listening, the love, the uplift — is powerless without prayer under it. Pull Up runs on prayer or it runs on nothing. Because we are not the ones who convert people. God is. Our job is to be near, to listen, to love, and to speak. His job is to move on the human heart. And the way we invite him to do his job is prayer.

Pray for your Three by name. Every day. Sixty seconds. That is the whole prayer. Do not embellish it. Do not save it up for Sunday. Sixty seconds of naming the person out loud and asking God to move on them. If you do only that — nothing else in this whole framework — you have done the most important thing.

Most churches drop the ball right after Event Day. The guests came, the invitation was made, the decision was signed — and then the connection card sat on a desk for two weeks while everybody caught their breath. Do not do that.

Follow-up is where evangelism becomes discipleship. The first 72 hours after somebody makes a decision are more important than the moment of decision itself. Not because their salvation is fragile — but because their formation is. A new believer without a shepherd inside three days will drift. A new believer with a shepherd inside three days will root.

If your Three came to Pull Up Sunday and said yes, your job did not end. It became more sacred. You are their first pastor now. You call. You show up. You bring them into the room. You walk them through the 30-60-90 pathway. You do not hand them off — you hand them forward.

This is why we did all of it. Every act of presence. Every hour of listening. Every meal, every text, every prayer at 6 in the morning. It was all for this — that somebody who did not know Jesus would come to know him. That is salvation. And it is the whole point.

Salvation is the moment somebody stops running and turns. It is the moment the Holy Spirit does what only the Holy Spirit can do — take a heart of stone and make it a heart of flesh. It is not our work. It is God’s work. But he uses us. He uses the person who was faithful with the Three. He uses the Squad that prayed by name every day for eight weeks. He uses the meal and the ride and the awkward moment where somebody finally said the name of Jesus out loud.

Do not romanticize the decision moment. Do not despise it either. It is where eternity turns on a hinge. Celebrate every one. Weep over every one. And then go do the next thing — the follow-up, the discipleship, the year like Barnabas.
